Veterinary Surgeon Spotlight: Dr. Loren Sri-Jayantha on Finding Purpose and Flexibility with MOVES

This month’s MOVES Specialist Spotlight features Dr. Loren Sri-Jayantha, DVM, DACVS (SA), a mobile veterinary surgeon bringing advanced surgical care to pets in the comfort of their general practice clinics. Guided by a deep appreciation for mentorship, collaboration, and personal growth, Dr. Sri-Jayantha has found new purpose in the mobile model—one that not only empowers his surgical work, but also supports his life as a new father. From tackling complex cases to tackling yard work, Dr. Sri-Jayantha shares how mobile surgery has reshaped his approach to both practice and personal fulfillment.

MOVES: What inspired you to pursue a career in veterinary surgery, and how has that passion evolved over the years?
SJ: The path I took to get here can largely be credited to good people, mentors & teachers. At more than one junction in my career (and youth) I found myself interested in multiple paths, and it was thanks to the help of others that I made my way to where I am. I couldn’t be more thankful, since I’ve found a career that is challenging and interesting, and that continues to allow me to be surrounded by people of character. As I understand the profession & myself more, I’m realizing there are countless ways I can make it my own.

MOVES: What made you want to bring your surgical skills to MOVES?
SJ: I had some major changes in my life—becoming a father, helping a family member navigate health issues—that made me reevaluate how I want to practice and realize my time at my then-place-of-work was not respected. I had heard positive things about a career with MOVES from a colleague of mine for several years. There was a pull toward MOVES as I found myself wanting something new and different, and that would allow me more control over my practice and time.

MOVES: How has the mobile model changed your work/life balance?
SJ: I feel like I have primary ownership over my relationship with the general practices I work with, but with the support of the MOVES team that has experience in the areas where I might be deficient (say, launching my practice). When I am working, I am engaged and productive, but when there is not work to be done, I have the flexibility to do what I choose with that time. My partner and I recently had a daughter, and the mobile model has allowed me to be present much more than I would be in other models of practice I’ve experienced.

MOVES: What’s it like working alongside general practice teams?
SJ: Very different than what I have experienced in specialty practices. The teams I work with are overwhelmingly welcoming and appreciative of the skills I can provide. Working in general practice settings can present unique challenges, but it has been rewarding to work with those teams to help pets and their people overcome these challenges.

MOVES: Have any recent surgical cases reminded you why this model works?
SJ: As someone who started doing this less than a year ago, I have already seen how appreciative clients are that they can keep their relationship with their primary care veterinarian throughout the process. I know that many of the pets I’ve been fortunate enough to treat have owners that simply can’t afford going to specialty hospitals for care. This model allows them access to specialty-level procedures for their pets.

MOVES: What would you tell other surgeons considering this kind of career move?
SJ: Mobile surgery is undoubtedly a different experience than what many of us are used to. I spent a lot of time reflecting on what I wanted and talking with colleagues about the choice to go mobile, and took the leap. This path has its own unique challenges, and is rewarding beyond the balance of life and work.

MOVES: What’s your go-to summer activity outside of surgery?
SJ: I love hiking, camping, and mountain biking. With a recent move to a house with a yard, honestly yard work and (hopefully) gardening will be a mainstay. Really, anything outside will do.

MOVES: Beach, mountains, or backyard barbecue—and why?
SJ: Mountains for me. I find the combination of the rigor of the climb and the beauty of the woods & summit hard to beat. If I ever need a ‘reset,’ you’ll find me there.
